Beyond that, the competition serves as a leading indicator of emerging green tech trends. And given that the Silicon Valley establishment judges the event, it’s an opportunity to gauge which way they see the wind blowing.

Kate Shepard at Grist points out that green jobs evangelist and best-selling author Van Jones might be tapped as the “green jobs” czar. She picks up on a weekend post at Greendig citing “texts from two people close to Van Jones” reporting that he was confirmed in the position Friday.

According to Greendig, the latest czar position would control the green-jobs related cash in the stimulus bill. That raises a few questions. Wasn’t green-jobs-legislation-sponsoring Hilda Solis pretty much meant to be a green jobs czar as Labor Secretary, anyway? And has Sen. Robert Byrd’s warning about czar overload in the White House fallen on deaf ears? There seem to be about half a dozen “czars” already, overseeing everything from health care to climate change without having to undergo a Senate confirmation.
