Afternoons at Sensible City are usually filled with coffee and e-mails. Last week we took a break from our regular programming for the betterment of our Asheville Community.

Partnered with Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, The Sensible City Team spent a day volunteering day at the Family Resource Center’s community garden in Emma. There was plenty of fresh air and sun at Emma Elementary School as everyone worked to set the Community Garden to bed for the winter. The afternoon was spent planting winter cover crops, mowing, and cleaning. “The clients we work with are geared towards education and social change,” says Sensible City Multi-Media Producer Andrea Desky, “so we like to reflect that with our own values.”

Take a look at the video to see the crew in action.

Glen McCandless of Selling to Schools invited Sensible City Founder Ian Bryan onto his program to discuss PR in education: blind spots, opportunities and sales integration. Episode Overview:

Public relations has taken the back seat to other types of lead generation education marketing for most companies in the K-12 market, especially with tight economic conditions.

Many companies focus their PR efforts on occasional features in education trade publications, while relying on press releases and web communications to reach the rest of their audience.

Most education marketing and sales executives struggle with PR measurement and ROI, relegating the lion’s share of their budgets to sales infrastructure, advertisements, tradeshows, webinars and other products believed to be “measurable”.

But recent market trends are causing some savvy executives to change their minds and reconsider PR — but framed quite differently.

In this episode, we’ll take about 15 minutes to explore the topic with our guest, PR expert Ian Bryan. Ian has a unique perspective on PR as a way to drive sales of educational technology. He and his organization, Sensible City, have been delivering sales-integrated PR in K12 education since 2005,and they have thousands of news stories and millions of dollars in sales to show for their efforts.

Visit www.sellingtoschools.com for more topics covered by Glen McCandless.

Robert Fogel Among Experts Who Say Good Ethics is Good Business

Good ethics is good business, according to a panel of business experts speaking at Good Business: The Dialogue Between the Spirit and the Letter of Business Ethics, sponsored by the University of Chicago Alumni Association and the Graham School of General Studies at Gleacher Center June 14.

“Business ethics should not be put on a shelf. It should be thought about and applied,” said moderator Gretchen Winter, JD, vice president of business practices at Baxter Corporation and chair of the Ethics Officer Association.
